RNLB Spirit of Lowestoft

The RNLB THE SPIRIT OF LOWESTOFT went on service in 1987 and replaced the Barnett class lifeboat ARCHIBALD AND ALEXANDER M PATERSON ON 924 That was on service at Lowestoft from 1986-1987. Our current lifeboat cost over a half a million pounds. The cost was met from the proceeds of the Lowestoft lifeboat appeal, together with the bequest of Albert Fredrick Worboys and other gifts and legacies. Her twin Detroit 6v92 ddec3 turbo and super charged intercooled engines give a 525 shp in each engine giving her a speed of 18 knots. Her overall length is 47ft and a beam of 15ft her draft is 4ft 2ins (1.270m) and her displacement is 24-25 tons. She carries a crew of 6 and has fuel for 240km. The hull is built of Corton steel and the superstructure is made of aluminium to reduce weight and to achieve a low centre of gravity and thus improve her self-righting capability. She has a long straight keel and protected propellers which makes possible rescue work in shoal waters which make her ideal off the Lowestoft coast her twin rudders are of a fabricated mild steel with steel stocks sprayed with stainless steel in way of the bearing surfaces
